I'm glad you wrote this, because doctors don't educate people enough. Sometimes they're so vague that it should actually be considered malpractice. They gave me an antibiotic for BV when I was pregnant and told me it would go away. They acted like BV was nothing to worry about. The doctors failed to tell me that it could come back and that the antibiotic would kill all the bacteria down there, making it more likely that it would come back. I learned about BV the hard way. 3 months after they gave me the antibiotic, I went into preterm labor and lost my baby (because the infection had come back and spread into my womb.) More people should be educated on BV, thank you for this article.

I am a fit and healthy 54 yr old and aquired my first vaginal infection recently: most likely from menopause because my husband has been my only partner the last 24 years. Anyway after a regular annual physical I got a call by my doctor's nurse saying I had Bacterial Vaginosis and that I would need to take a weeks worth of Flagyl to treat it. The only info over the phone she gave me was that BV was common and if I agreed to take the Flagyl I couldn't drink alcohol during treatment or I would have an adverse reaction. No problem I said because I so seldom drink alcohol of any kind. Since I new nothing about BV I took the pills (500mg 2x/day x 7 days)and started really feeling sick on day 5. I checked a drug book and found I should have been taking the 750mg extended release daily and that got me thinking that the 1000mg I was taking could be too much. I just assumed the 750 tabs were more expensive (I have insurance) and probably why my doctor didn't order it. Well by day 7 I felt absolutely awful: throbbing Headache, low back pain and really strong pain in my hips and femur bones, and indigestion. All symptoms new to me. I joked to my husband I felt like I was slowly being poisoned. After a sleepless night the day after my last dose I woke up with a swollen face with large red blotches that extended down my neck and to my shoulders. My chest and abdomen looked like I had chicken pox. My arms and legs also had small patches of red dots. That is when I knew I was having a reaction to the drug. I immediately went back to the internet for more information. I called my doctor's office and got a message machine and explained that I had an allergic reaction to Flagyl but that I did finish the treatment and I asked to put in my record that I am allergic to Flagyl. I went back to the internet and 2 days later I came upon this website and it has been the most informative out of the dozen I read so far. Never did get a call back from my doctor and after reading most of the info on your website I believe my doctor does not know this information which is surprising and disappointing. There is a lot of material here and all of it I found very helpful. Instead of printing out every article here (you said it was OK if just one copy for my personal use), is there a book I can buy with this very same information? If so I will buy a copy for my doctor. My last question regarding home remedies is would soaking a tampon in apple cider or liquid probiotic be just as effective as plain yogurt? Thank you so much for providing this website and this comment section. Vicki
